0.0000 troy oz 1871 Very Fine

The 1871 Two Cent Piece stands as a fascinating artifact from a transitional era in American coinage. Struck in pure copper at the Philadelphia Mint, this denomination represents a brief but highly distinctive chapter in United States currency. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, preserving the clear details of its deeply symbolic engraving. On the obverse, a detailed escutcheon or shield takes center stage. This emblem was chosen to represent national fortitude, strength, and the protective power of unified states. Draped over the shield is a scroll bearing the solemn declaration, 'IN GOD WE TRUST', marking this coin series as the very first in United States history to carry this now-famous motto. The year 1871 is clearly struck beneath the shield, anchoring the piece in its post-Civil War context. The reverse of the coin features a delicate and ornate wreath of wheat, which gracefully curves to encircle the bold denomination of '2 CENTS'. Surrounding this central wreath is the legend 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'. Designed by James Longacre, the harmonious balance of the protective shield on one side and the agricultural wreath on the other offers a vivid look into the artistic and national themes of the late nineteenth century.
