1865-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle XF

0.9675 troy oz .900 1865 Extra Fine

Struck in the final year of the American Civil War, this twenty-dollar gold piece represents a fascinating era of United States coinage. Minted at the San Francisco facility, this coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold and has survived in Extra Fine condition. Many of these large gold pieces were melted down in later decades, making surviving specimens particularly intriguing to study. The obverse displays a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name, surrounded by a ring of thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse features a classic heraldic eagle bearing a shield, with another cluster of thirteen stars positioned above the bird. The inscriptions on the reverse designate the issuing nation as the United States of America alongside the face value of twenty dollars.
