1866-1867 Shield Nickel w/Rays Cull-Dateless

0.0000 troy oz Cull

In the years immediately following the American Civil War, the United States introduced a new five-cent coin that departed from traditional silver coinage. Minted in Philadelphia during 1866 and 1867, this early version of the Shield Nickel features a highly distinctive reverse design that was quickly modified, making specimens from these two years particularly fascinating to study. The obverse of the coin displays a detailed shield, which was modeled after the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. Inscriptions reading STATES OF AMERICA surround this patriotic emblem. On the reverse, the central denomination is encircled by thirteen stars interspersed with decorative rays. These rays were removed from the design later in 1867, leaving this specific variety as a captivating snapshot of early post-war coinage experimentation. Even in a heavily worn, dateless cull condition, these sovereign coins carry the unmistakable artistry of their creator, James Longacre. Backed by the United States government, they represent a pivotal era in the nation's monetary development, when base metal began to permanently replace fractional paper currency in daily commerce.
