The year 1883 marked the end of an era for the United States five cent piece, representing the final issue of the distinctive Shield Nickel series. This coin represents a fascinating transitional moment in American numismatic history, capturing the aesthetic preferences of the late nineteenth century before the design was permanently retired. On the obverse side, the central motif is a highly detailed shield, which draws its inspiration directly from the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. Above this patriotic emblem, the timeless national motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed, while the year 1883 is clearly stamped below it. James Longacre was the artist behind this intricate engraving. Turning the coin over reveals a bold reverse design centered on the numeral five, which is encircled by a ring of thirteen stars. The surrounding inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and CENTS, framing the symbolic stars. This particular specimen survives in Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while preserving the essential elements of its historic imagery.
