Prior to this series, the five-cent denomination was a tiny silver coin known as the half dime. This larger, more durable replacement circulated widely through the late nineteenth century, serving as a practical tool for daily commerce during a period of national reconstruction. The obverse of this historic coin showcases a detailed heraldic shield, a design element inspired by the Great Seal of the United States. Positioned above the shield is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," though early strikes and circulated specimens often show interesting variations in how these letters wear over time.
