In 1866, the United States introduced a brand-new five-cent coin made from a copper-nickel alloy, departing from the traditional silver half dime. This inaugural year of the Shield Nickel series is highly distinguished by its reverse design, which features thirteen stars interspersed with ornamental rays radiating outward from the central numeral. This specific ray design proved difficult to strike cleanly and was altered shortly after the series began, making the original 1866 versions particularly compelling to study. The obverse of the coin displays a highly detailed patriotic shield, draped with laurel branches and topped with a cross. Above the shield, the classic motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed, while the year 1866 is clearly struck at the bottom.
