1866 Shield Nickel w/Rays AU

0.0000 troy oz 1866 Almost Unc

In 1866, the United States introduced a brand new design for its five-cent denomination. This initial year of issue features the distinctive Shield Nickel design, which presents a detailed shield on the obverse inspired by the coat of arms from the Great Seal of the United States. Above the shield, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is clearly inscribed, with the date of manufacture positioned directly below. The reverse of this five-cent piece displays the numeric denomination surrounded by a circle of thirteen stars, interspersed with rays. The words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "CENTS" frame this central design element. This particular specimen has survived in About Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details of the engraving. As a sovereign issue backed by the United States government, this coin represents a significant moment in the nation's post-Civil War coinage history. The design was created by James Longacre, who utilized the shield motif to symbolize national unity and strength during a period of reconstruction.
