In 1866, the United States introduced a new five-cent piece made of copper and nickel, a departure from the silver half dimes of the past. This initial year of issue features a distinctive design element that was quickly removed in subsequent years: metal rays that pass between the stars on the reverse. This short-lived variety makes the 1866 issue a particularly compelling piece of American numismatic history. The obverse of the coin displays a large, ornate shield, which draws its inspiration from the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. This shield serves as a powerful emblem of national unity and strength during a period of reconstruction. Above the shield, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is clearly inscribed, while the year "1866" rests below. On the reverse, the numeral "5" is positioned at the center, surrounded by the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "CENTS". Encircling this central denomination are thirteen stars, representing the original colonies that founded the nation. On this first-year design, these stars are interspersed with rays, creating a dynamic starburst effect that defines this scarce type.
