In 1866, the United States introduced a brand new five-cent coin made of copper and nickel, departing from the traditional silver half dime. This first-year issue, graded in Very Good condition, showcases a design deeply rooted in the nation's identity. The front of the coin displays an ornamental shield, which draws its inspiration directly from the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. Above this protective emblem, the national motto of trust is inscribed, while the year 1866 is anchored at the bottom. Turning the coin over reveals its most distinctive feature, which was only produced for a brief period. The reverse displays the large numeral five, representing its face value, encircled by thirteen stars. Alternating between these stars are bold, radiating rays that project outward from the center. This specific ray pattern makes the earliest Shield Nickels highly recognizable and particularly intriguing to study, as the design was modified shortly after its debut.
