The five-cent piece underwent a dramatic transformation in 1866 with the introduction of the Shield Nickel. This particular coin, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, represents the very first year of this classic American series. Above the shield, the national motto is proudly displayed, while the year of manufacture is anchored at the bottom.
