1867 Shield Nickel w/Rays Fine

0.0000 troy oz 1867 Fine

The five-cent piece underwent a dramatic visual transformation in the post-Civil War era, resulting in the distinctive Shield Nickel. This 1867 issue, preserved in Fine condition, showcases a bold obverse design centered on a highly detailed shield. This central emblem draws inspiration directly from the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. Above the shield, the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is clearly inscribed, while the year 1867 is anchored at the very bottom. On the reverse, the coin features the numeral five to denote its denomination, surrounded by the word "CENTS". This central value is encircled by a ring of thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. The surrounding legend reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Created by designer James Longacre, this copper-nickel coin represents a fascinating chapter in the evolution of early United States minor coinage.
