In the years following the Civil War, the United States introduced a bold new look for its five cent piece. The 1867 Shield Nickel stands out as a fascinating example of this early copper nickel coinage, particularly because of its short lived design elements. This specific variety features a series of metal rays radiating between the stars on the reverse, a striking visual choice that was discontinued during this very year. The front of the coin showcases an ornate shield, which draws its inspiration directly from the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. Positioned above this emblem is the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, while the year 1867 is anchored at the bottom. This layout presents a powerful image of national unity and strength during a period of reconstruction. On the reverse, the numeral 5 is prominently displayed in the center, surrounded by the word CENTS. This central denomination is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the distinctive rays filling the spaces between them. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches gracefully around the upper border. Because the rays made the coin difficult to strike cleanly, they were removed from the production process in 1867, making this particular variant a highly compelling piece of numismatic history.
