1868 Shield Nickel AU

0.0000 troy oz 1868 Almost Unc

In the years following the American Civil War, the United States Mint introduced a bold new design for the five-cent denomination. The 1868 Shield Nickel stands as a fascinating artifact from this era of national reconstruction. Struck in Philadelphia, this particular specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, retaining much of its original detail and offering a clear window into late nineteenth-century American coinage. The obverse of the coin displays a large, ornate shield, which was modeled after the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. Above this central emblem, the national motto is split into segments, reading from left to right as TRUST, WE, GOD, and IN, while the year 1868 is clearly stamped below. This intricate engraving was the work of James Longacre, who sought to project strength and unity through the shield imagery. On the reverse, the design shifts to a simple yet powerful presentation of the coin's value. The numeral 5 sits directly in the center, surrounded by a ring of thirteen stars to represent the original colonies. The surrounding inscription reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and CENTS, framing the central motif. Backed by the United States government as official legal tender, this coin represents a key moment in the evolution of everyday American currency.
