1868 Shield Nickel BU
The 1868 Shield Nickel offers a fascinating window into the post-Civil War era of American coinage. As a five-cent piece struck in Philadelphia, this specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the sharp details of its original engraving. The coin represents a pivotal moment in United States currency when the nation transitioned to base-metal five-cent pieces. On the obverse, a prominent shield dominates the design, drawing inspiration directly from the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. This patriotic motif is crowned with the classic motto IN GOD WE TRUST, with the year of production, 1868, positioned at the very bottom. The intricate lines of the shield and the surrounding foliage remain remarkably crisp on this uncirculated survivor. The reverse side of the coin features a large numeral 5 centered within a circular halo of 13 stars, symbolizing the original colonies. This central design is encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination CENTS. This government-backed issue showcases the artistic vision of James Longacre, whose work defined the look of American pocket change during the mid-nineteenth century.
