The 1868 Shield Nickel offers a fascinating window into the post-Civil War era of American coinage. As a five-cent piece struck in Philadelphia, this specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the sharp details of its original engraving. The coin represents a pivotal moment in United States currency when the nation transitioned to base-metal five-cent pieces. On the obverse, a prominent shield dominates the design, drawing inspiration directly from the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. This patriotic motif is crowned with the classic motto IN GOD WE TRUST, with the year of production, 1868, positioned at the very bottom.
