1868 Shield Nickel VF
The 1868 five-cent piece offers a fascinating window into post-Civil War American coinage. Known as the Shield Nickel, this coin represents a significant departure from earlier silver half dimes, introducing a base-metal alternative that quickly became a staple of daily commerce. On the obverse, a large, detailed shield dominates the design, drawing its inspiration directly from the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. Above this emblem of national unity, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is clearly inscribed, while the year 1868 is positioned at the bottom. The reverse side of the coin features a large numeral 5, representing its denomination, surrounded by a circular frame of thirteen stars. This design element is encircled by the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the word "CENTS" below. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, showing clear details of James Longacre's intricate engraving.
