1868 Shield Nickel VG
The 1868 Shield Nickel offers a fascinating glimpse into the post-Civil War coinage of the United States. Strikingly different from the five-cent pieces of today, this early copper-nickel coin features a bold, patriotic design on its obverse. A large shield, inspired by the coat of arms from the Great Seal of the United States, dominates the front. Above this shield, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed, while the date 1868 is anchored below it. On the reverse, the coin displays a large numeral 5, representing its face value of five cents. This central number is encircled by a ring of thirteen stars, a classic nod to the original American colonies. Created by engraver James Longacre, this design represents one of the earliest years of the Shield Nickel series, which was minted in Philadelphia.
