The 1869 Shield Nickel represents an intriguing era in United States coinage, serving as an early example of the five-cent denomination struck in a copper-nickel alloy. Minted in Philadelphia, this circulated piece carries the honest wear of a coin that actively passed through the hands of everyday Americans during the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. The obverse design displays an ornate shield, which draws its inspiration directly from the Great Seal of the United States. Positioned above this central emblem is the patriotic motto "IN GOD WE TRUST", while the year 1869 is clearly struck below it.
