0.9675 troy oz .900 1871 Almost Unc - 53 (PCGS)

In 1871, the San Francisco Mint produced a run of 928,000 gold double eagles, each carrying the distinctive 'S' mint mark. This particular coin has survived the decades in a certified Almost Uncirculated 53 condition, preserving the details of its mid nineteenth century artistry. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, this piece represents a classic era of United States coinage, minted with a purity of 0.900 gold. The obverse of the coin displays a left facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair secured with a coronet that clearly bears the inscription 'Liberty'. Directly beneath her portrait, the year 1871 is stamped. The reverse side features a detailed heraldic eagle, surrounded by the legends 'United States of America' and 'Twenty Dollars'. Designed by James Barton Longacre, this iconic imagery defined the double eagle series throughout its production run from 1850 to 1907.
