The 1872 Shield Nickel represents an intriguing era in United States coinage. This five-cent piece, struck in Philadelphia, showcases a prominent shield design on its obverse, which draws its inspiration directly from the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. Above the shield, the patriotic motto IN GOD WE TRUST is displayed, with the year of issue positioned at the very bottom.
