The 1875 Shield Nickel represents a fascinating era in American coinage, serving as one of the earliest examples of the five-cent denomination struck in base metal rather than silver. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, showing the clear, honest wear of a coin that actively circulated during the late nineteenth century. Minted in Philadelphia, this issue carries no mint mark, which was the standard practice for the main United States minting facility at the time. On the obverse, the central design displays a highly detailed decorative shield, which draws its inspiration directly from the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. Positioned above this patriotic emblem is the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, while the date 1875 is clearly visible at the bottom. The design was created by James Longacre, who integrated strong national symbols to foster unity in the years following the Civil War. The reverse of the coin focuses on utility and national identity, dominated by a large numeral 5 that denotes its face value. Surrounding this central number is a circular constellation of 13 stars, representing the original colonies, alongside the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the word CENTS. The bold, uncluttered layout of the reverse ensured that the public could easily recognize this relatively new format of five-cent currency.
