1876 Shield Nickel VG
The 1876 Shield Nickel represents an intriguing era in American base-metal coinage. On the obverse, the central design features a prominent shield modeled after the coat of arms from the Great Seal of the United States. This patriotic emblem is surrounded by the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the date "1876" at the bottom, with the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" positioned above the shield. On the reverse side, the coin displays its face value of "5 CENTS" in the center. This denomination is encircled by a ring of thirteen stars, symbolizing the original colonies. Sculpted by James Longacre, this five-cent piece is a sovereign coin backed by the United States government and is preserved in Very Good condition.
