In 1876, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a distinctive five-cent piece known today as the Shield Nickel. This coin, preserved in Extra Fine condition, represents a fascinating era in American coinage when the nation was transitioning to base-metal minor coins for everyday commerce. Backed fully by the United States government, this denomination played a vital role in daily transactions during the late nineteenth century. The obverse of the coin features an intricate shield design, which James Longacre modeled after the coat of arms found on the Great Seal of the United States. Positioned above the shield, the national motto reads "IN GOD WE TRUST," while the year 1876 is stamped clearly at the bottom. This patriotic imagery served as a powerful symbol of national unity during the Reconstruction era. On the reverse, the coin displays a large numeral 5 to indicate its face value of 5 Cents. This central denomination is encircled by a ring of 13 stars, representing the original colonies that founded the nation.
