1878 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle MS-65 NGC

0.4837 troy oz .900 1878 NGC

In 1878, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of just 73,780 ten dollar gold pieces. These coins, struck from 0.900 fine gold with a precious metal content of 0.4837 troy ounces, represent a classic era of American coinage. This specific specimen has survived the decades in an extraordinary state of preservation, earning a high grade of Mint State 65 (MS-65) from a professional grading service. The obverse features the iconic profile of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the year 1878 anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, an eagle holds an olive branch and arrows, flanked by the national motto and the legend of the issuing country. The denomination is spelled out at the bottom as TEN D. Because it was struck at the main Philadelphia facility, the coin bears no mintmark, leaving the space below the eagle clean and elegant.
