1879 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle MS-61 NGC

0.4838 troy oz .900 1879 NGC

In 1879, the Philadelphia Mint produced 384,740 of these ten-dollar gold pieces. This particular specimen has survived the decades in remarkable condition, earning a Mint State 61 certification. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, the coin contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal, representing the standard of American circulating coinage from the late nineteenth century. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty, her hair secured by a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1879 is struck boldly below the bust. On the reverse, an eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows, shielded by the national crest. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TEN D., alongside the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Because it was minted in Philadelphia, the coin bears no mint mark, leaving the space below the eagle clean.
