Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1880, this ten dollar gold piece represents a historic era of American coinage. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold with a precious metal content of 0.4838 troy ounces, the coin belongs to a celebrated design series that was produced from 1838 to 1907. Although the original mintage for this year was 1,644,840 pieces, many of these coins were melted down in subsequent decades, making surviving examples in Extra Fine condition particularly fascinating to study. The obverse of the coin showcases a left-facing profile of Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and thirteen stars encircle her portrait to represent the original colonies. The year 1880 is anchored at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a majestic heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield across its chest. The bird holds its traditional symbols while surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Below the eagle, the denomination is clearly marked as TEN D. This classic design was created by Christian Gobrecht, leaving a lasting legacy in the history of United States currency.
