Struck in 1880 at the San Francisco Mint, this ten-dollar gold piece represents a classic era of American coinage. It contains 0.4838 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. While the original mintage for this specific year and mint stood at 506,250 pieces, the actual number surviving today is far lower, as a vast quantity of these gold issues were melted down over the decades. The design, created by Christian Gobrecht, was produced by the United States Mint from 1838 to 1907. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Liberty is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with her name clearly inscribed upon her hair band. The reverse displays a detailed heraldic eagle bearing a shield across its chest, surrounded by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the ten-dollar denomination. This particular coin has survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details of a design that was once struck at various mint facilities across the country, including Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco.
