In 1880, the San Francisco mint produced a run of 506,250 gold ten-dollar coins, known to enthusiasts as the Liberty Gold Eagle. Struck in 0.900 fine gold, this particular piece contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal. It stands as a remarkable survivor from the late nineteenth century, preserved well enough to earn a certified grade of Mint State 61 (MS-61). The obverse features a classic representation of Liberty, surrounded by stars and the year 1880. On the reverse, the design showcases a heraldic eagle alongside the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," the country name "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the denomination abbreviated as "TEN D." Just below the eagle, the "S" mint mark identifies its origin from the historic California minting facility.
