In 1881, the Philadelphia Mint produced a substantial run of ten-dollar gold coins, striking over 3.8 million pieces. These classic Liberty Head eagles were crafted from 90 percent gold, containing just under half an ounce of pure precious metal (0.4838 troy ounces). Because they were struck at the main minting facility in Pennsylvania, they do not bear a mint mark. This specific coin has survived the decades in an extraordinary state of preservation, earning a certified grade of Mint State 63 (MS-63). Finding pre-1933 United States gold in such choice, uncirculated condition offers a rare glimpse into the original luster and detail of late nineteenth-century American coinage. The design features the classic profile of Liberty on the obverse, accompanied by the date 1881.
