0.4838 troy oz .900 1883 Almost Unc

Struck in 1883 at the Philadelphia Mint, this ten-dollar gold coin represents a classic era of American coinage. It is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.4838 troy ounces of the precious metal. While 208,700 of these pieces were originally minted, many were melted down in subsequent years, making surviving examples in About Uncirculated condition particularly intriguing to study. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield on its chest. The eagle is encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the face value, TEN D. This enduring design, created by Christian Gobrecht, was minted for nearly seven decades, from 1838 to 1907.
