1883 Liberty Head V Nickel AU-55 PCGS (Cents)
In 1883, the United States Mint introduced a fresh look for the five-cent coin, creating what we now know as the Liberty Head V Nickel. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this initial version of the coin featured a classic profile of Liberty on the obverse, surrounded by stars with the date below. The reverse prominently displayed a large Roman numeral V to denote its five-cent value, but it lacked the word cents, a detail that quickly led to unexpected challenges in circulation. Because the coin was similar in size to a five-dollar gold piece, some individuals gold-plated these nickels and passed them off as the much higher denomination. To correct this issue, the mint added the word CENTS to the reverse design later that same year, making this original, short-lived variety a highly compelling piece of American coinage history. This particular specimen is certified in Almost Uncirculated 55 condition, preserving the fine details of the original design. The obverse features the word LIBERTY inscribed on Liberty's coronet, while the reverse bears the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM alongside the name of the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
