1883 Liberty Head V Nickel No Cents BU

In 1883, the United States Mint introduced a new five-cent piece that would quickly become one of the most talked-about coins in American history. Designed by Charles Barber, this initial release of the Liberty Head nickel features a distinct reverse design that includes only the Roman numeral V to denote its value, completely omitting the word "Cents." This specific layout was minted for only a single year, making it a highly unusual and intriguing artifact of nineteenth-century American coinage. The obverse of the coin presents a classic profile of Liberty facing left, adorned with a coronet or crown. Thirteen stars encircle her portrait, with the date 1883 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, a large Roman numeral V is surrounded by a wreath, which is itself encircled by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Because the coin lacked the word "Cents," it shared a similar size and design layout with the contemporary five-dollar gold piece. This similarity led to a famous historical loophole where individuals gold-plated the nickels and passed them off as five-dollar coins.
