1883 Liberty Head V Nickel No Cents Good-Fine

0.0000 troy oz 1883 Good or Better

In 1883, the United States Mint introduced a fresh look for the five-cent piece, launching the Liberty Head series. This inaugural version, known to collectors as the Type I variety, represents a fascinating moment in American numismatic history. Because it was the very first year of issue, the design underwent an immediate and permanent change after its release, making this specific 1883 format a highly distinct, one-year design type. The obverse of the coin features a classic profile of Liberty facing left, adorned with a coronet or crown. The year 1883 is stamped clearly below her portrait. On the reverse, a large Roman numeral V dominates the center, representing the five-cent denomination. This numeral is encircled by a decorative wreath, which is in turn surrounded by the country name and the traditional motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM. What makes this particular coin so intriguing is what is missing from the reverse. The design completely omits the word "Cents," featuring only the Roman numeral to indicate its value. This omission created an unexpected loophole at the time, as the coin was similar in size to a five-dollar gold piece, leading to a quick revision of the design later in the year. This specimen, preserved in Good or Better condition, offers a direct look at a brief and famous chapter in coinage design.
