1883 Liberty Head V Nickel No Cents MS-63 NGC
In 1883, the United States introduced a fresh look for its five-cent piece, a design that would quickly become one of the most talked-about coins of the era. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this initial version of the Liberty Head nickel is famous for what it left off its reverse. Rather than spelling out the denomination, the design relied solely on a large Roman numeral V to indicate its value, surrounded by a decorative wreath. The obverse of the coin showcases a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty. Her hair is styled with a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, adorned with a delicate combination of cotton bolls and wheat. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies, with the date 1883 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, the prominent Roman numeral V is encircled by a wreath of wheat, corn, and maple. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches along the top, while the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is nestled at the bottom. Because the word CENTS was entirely absent from this original 1883 release, it created a unique chapter in American numismatic history. This particular specimen has survived in remarkable condition, certified as Mint State 63 (MS-63), preserving the crisp details of the engraving for modern observers to appreciate.
