In 1883, the United States Mint introduced a striking new five-cent piece that would quickly capture the public's attention. Designed by Charles Barber and struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin features a classical profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse, her hair adorned with a coronet and a detailed wreath. The reverse showcases a wreath of agricultural wreaths surrounding a large Roman numeral V, representing the five-cent denomination. This particular coin is notable for what it does not say. The initial 1883 release omitted the word cents entirely, relying solely on the Roman numeral V to convey its face value. This design choice created an unexpected sensation, as the size of the coin was remarkably similar to a five-dollar gold piece, leading to creative alterations by contemporary opportunists. Later that same year, the Mint modified the reverse to include the word cents to prevent further confusion. With a total mintage of 5,474,300, this specimen has survived in remarkable condition, certified at a high-grade Mint State 64 (MS-64). It stands as a beautifully preserved example of a brief and fascinating moment in American numismatic history, displaying the crisp details of Barber's original design before the hasty revision.
