In 1883, the United States introduced a five-cent piece with a distinct design choice that would quickly make it a standout issue in American numismatics. This particular coin, preserved in Very Fine condition, represents a specific one-year type. The reverse of the coin features a large Roman numeral V, representing the number five, surrounded by a wreath and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Crucially, the design completely lacks the word Cents, a omission that defines this early variety. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse showcases a left-facing portrait of Liberty adorned with a coronet or crown. The word LIBERTY is inscribed upon her headpiece, while the date 1883 is positioned directly below the bust.
