1883 Liberty Head V Nickel No Cents XF

0.0000 troy oz 1883 Extra Fine

In 1883, the United States introduced a striking new five-cent piece that would quickly become one of the most talked-about coins in American history. Designed by Charles Barber, this initial release of the Liberty Head nickel features a classic profile of Liberty on the obverse, her hair adorned with a coronet. The reverse displays a large Roman numeral V, representing the five-cent denomination, encircled by a decorative wreath. This early version of the coin is famous for what it does not say. The design entirely omits the word cents, featuring only the Roman numeral to indicate its value. This omission created an unexpected loophole, as the coin was similar in size to a five-dollar gold piece, leading to mischievous individuals gold-plating the nickels to pass them off as high-value currency. Later that same year, the design was modified to include the word cents to prevent this confusion. This particular specimen is preserved in Extra Fine condition, showcasing the fine details of the original engraving. The obverse bears the inscription of Liberty and the year 1883, while the reverse displays the traditional motto E Pluribus Unum along with United States of America surrounding the central V. It remains a captivating artifact from a brief and memorable moment in United States coinage.
