In 1883, the United States Mint introduced a new look for the five-cent piece, resulting in a design that quickly became one of the most talked-about coins of its era. This particular specimen, preserved in Fine condition, represents the modified version of that inaugural year, which clearly displays the denomination to prevent confusion. The obverse of the coin showcases a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a crown, surrounded by stars with the date 1883 positioned at the bottom. This classic depiction was the work of Charles Barber, whose artistic influence defined American coinage during this period. On the reverse, a large Roman numeral V, representing the number five, is encircled by a decorative wreath. Unlike the very first issues of 1883, this version features the word CENTS prominently at the bottom to clarify its face value. The traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is placed above the wreath, while the country name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA wraps around the upper border, completing a design that remains a fascinating study in early American numismatics.
