In 1883, the United States Mint introduced a new design for the five-cent coin, featuring a classic profile of Liberty on the obverse and a prominent Roman numeral V on the reverse. The initial release of this design omitted the word "CENTS" entirely, which quickly led to confusion and unauthorized alterations. Later that same year, the Philadelphia Mint corrected this oversight by adding "CENTS" to the bottom of the reverse design, creating a distinct and highly sought-after variety for observers of American coinage. This particular specimen is a beautiful survivor from that historic first year of issue, struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a total mintage of 16,026,200.
