In 1883, the United States introduced a fresh look for its five-cent piece, a design crafted by Charles Barber. The obverse of this base-metal coin showcases a profile of Liberty adorned with a classic headdress, surrounded by the date of manufacture. This particular specimen has survived in Very Fine condition, showing the clear details of a design that quickly became a talking point across the nation. The reverse of the coin is especially notable for its central, large Roman numeral V. On this specific variety, the numeral is encircled by a decorative wreath, with the country name and the denomination CENTS proudly displayed. The inclusion of the word CENTS was a significant update for the 1883 release, clarifying the coin's face value alongside the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
