1883 Liberty Head V Nickel w/Cents VG
The year 1883 marked a notable moment in the history of United States five-cent coinage. This particular Liberty Head nickel, graded in Very Good condition, represents a fascinating design transition. Created by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin showcases a left-facing portrait of Liberty, who wears a crown upon her head. The year of production is clearly struck beneath her portrait. On the reverse, a large Roman numeral V dominates the center, representing the coin's value of five. This numeral is encircled by a decorative wreath, which is itself surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Crucially, this version features the word CENTS at the very bottom of the reverse, a design detail that clarified the denomination of the coin.
