1883 Liberty Head V Nickel w/Cents XF

0.0000 troy oz 1883 Extra Fine

In 1883, the United States introduced a fresh look for its five cent coin, resulting in one of the most famous design transitions in American numismatics. This particular coin represents the second version released during that inaugural year, distinguished by the prominent addition of the word Cents at the bottom of the reverse. The modification was a swift response to public confusion and clever opportunists who gold-plated the original, wordless version to pass it off as a five dollar coin. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of this five cent piece showcases a classic portrait of Liberty facing left, adorned with a coronet headdress inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, with the year 1883 anchored at the bottom. The design reflects the elegant, neoclassical aesthetic of late nineteenth century American coinage. The reverse is centered around a large Roman numeral V, representing the denomination of five. Surrounding this central figure is a decorative wreath, which is encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Above the wreath, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is clearly displayed, while the newly added denomination CENTS sits boldly at the base. Preserved in Extra Fine condition, this coin offers a clear look at a pivotal moment in design history.
