1883 Shield Nickel XF
The 1883 Shield Nickel represents the final year of a fascinating chapter in United States coinage. Struck in Philadelphia, this five-cent piece showcases a bold obverse design centered on a protective shield, which draws its inspiration from the coat of arms on the Great Seal of the United States. Above the shield, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is clearly inscribed, while the year 1883 is positioned directly below. On the reverse, the coin features a large numeral 5 surrounded by the word "CENTS", which is encircled by a ring of thirteen stars. The surrounding legend reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". This copper-alloy coin, graded in Extra Fine 45 condition, offers a tangible look at late nineteenth-century American currency design before the transition to the Liberty Head motif later that same year.
