In 1884, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of just 76,860 gold ten-dollar pieces. Over the decades, a vast number of these coins were melted down, making surviving examples in About Uncirculated condition a compelling find for those exploring nineteenth-century American coinage. This substantial piece contains 0.4838 troy ounces of gold, struck with a purity of 90 percent. The obverse presents a left-facing profile of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name. A ring of thirteen stars encircles her, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, artist Christian Gobrecht placed a heraldic eagle clutching a shield. The eagle is framed by the legend denoting the United States of America and the ten-dollar face value, rendered as TEN D. This enduring design was struck by the mint from 1838 to 1907, serving as a staple of American commerce during a period of rapid national expansion.
