Introduced in the early 1880s, the Liberty Head five-cent piece represents a classic era of United States coinage. This particular specimen hails from 1884, marking only the second year that the Mint struck this famous design. Crafted by Chief Engraver Charles Barber, the coin represents a transition in American numismatic art, replacing the older Shield design with a more classical aesthetic. The front of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. She wears a coronet inscribed with her name, while her hair is pulled back softly, surrounded by stars representing the young nation. The year 1884 is clearly anchored at the bottom of the portrait. On the reverse, the coin displays its denomination through a large Roman numeral V, which sits inside a decorative wreath of agricultural products. The legend declaring the United States of America circles the rim, accompanied by the traditional motto E Pluribus Unum. This specimen survives in Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that actively circulated in late nineteenth-century commerce.
