The 1884 Liberty Head nickel represents a very early moment in the history of this classic American five-cent denomination. Coming from just the second year this specific design was minted, the coin showcases the artistry of Charles Barber during a period of transition for United States coinage. Struck in copper-nickel at the Philadelphia Mint, these pieces circulated widely as the nation's commerce expanded in the late nineteenth century. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, who wears a crown inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies, with the date 1884 positioned clearly at the bottom. This particular specimen has been preserved in Very Fine condition, showing pleasing detail in the hair and crown that often wore away quickly during daily transactions. On the reverse, the coin features a large Roman numeral V, which denotes its five-cent value. This central numeral is encircled by a decorative wreath, which is itself surrounded by the legends indicating the country of origin and the traditional motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM.
