The 1885 Liberty Head five-cent piece represents a classic era of United States coinage. This particular specimen, preserved in Almost Good condition, displays the wear and character of a coin that actively circulated through the commerce of the late nineteenth century. Strikingly simple yet elegant, the coin is composed of base metal rather than precious silver or gold. On the obverse side, the profile of Liberty is depicted wearing a crown. The year 1885 is clearly visible beneath her portrait, marking a specific moment in American numismatic history. This side of the coin was designed by Charles Barber, who brought a refined, classical aesthetic to the nation's minor coinage. The reverse of the coin is dominated by a large letter V, which functions as the Roman numeral for five. This central symbol is encircled by a decorative wreath, which is in turn surrounded by the traditional motto E Pluribus Unum.
