This five cent piece from 1887 represents a classic era of United States coinage. Struck in Philadelphia without a mint mark, the coin is composed entirely of base metals, containing no precious metal content. It survives today in Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that circulated actively in late nineteenth century commerce. The obverse presents a left facing portrait of Liberty, who wears a crown inscribed with her name. On the reverse, a large Roman numeral V represents the denomination of five cents. This central numeral is framed by a decorative wreath, which is surrounded by the national motto and the name of the issuing country.
