1889 Liberty Seated Dime VG

0.0715 troy oz .900 1889 Very Good

The 1889 Liberty Seated dime represents a classic era of American silver coinage. Struck in 90% fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this ten-cent piece contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Having survived more than a century, this particular coin is preserved in Very Good condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that once circulated widely in everyday commerce. Created by the noted artist Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the dime depicts Lady Liberty seated upon a rock. In her left hand, she supports a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom, while her right hand rests on a shield inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The date 1889 is clearly visible beneath her. Encircling the central figure is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The reverse of the coin focuses on the denomination, with the words ONE DIME boldly displayed in the center. A detailed wreath wraps around the denomination, completing a balanced and elegant design that defined American pocket change throughout much of the nineteenth century.
