In 1890, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of just 57,980 ten-dollar gold coins. This classic piece of American coinage, designed by Christian Gobrecht, represents a long-running design series that spanned from 1838 to 1907. Struck in 0.900 fine gold, each coin contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield across its chest, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the face value, TEN D.
