The 1891 Liberty Head five-cent piece offers a fascinating window into late nineteenth-century American coinage. Struck in copper, this coin represents a classic era of United States currency design. This particular example has been preserved in Very Good condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that likely circulated widely during the Gilded Age. On the obverse, the design presents a dignified profile of Liberty facing left. She wears a coronet or crown inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1891 positioned at the bottom. The entire design was created by the noted engraver Charles Barber, who left a massive imprint on the look of American money during this period. The reverse of the coin is dominated by a large Roman numeral V, representing the five-cent denomination. This central letter is encircled by a wreath of agricultural products, which is in turn surrounded by the legend indicating the country of origin, United States of America.
